Inflammation of the spinal joints is a primary cause of back pain. Inflammation can be the result of a pro-inflammatory diet rich in animal fats, high in cholesterol, and calories.
Inflammation can also result from dysglycemia, an abnormal regulation of blood sugar. Insulin resistance, or pre-diabetes, is the most common form of dysglycemia today. Insulin-resistant people have to produce abnormal amounts of insulin to move sugar into their cells. Insulin is very inflammatory.
Inflammation can also result from food sensitivities. A food sensitivity is not the same as a food allergy. A food sensitivity is when you eat something and your immune system reacts against it like it was a foreign invader. This creates systemic inflammation which can flare a chronic back pain sufferer. The problem is that many food sensitivities don't cause stomach or GI irritation that might lead you to look for them.
When we see a chronic back pain sufferer we screen for these inflammation sources using various forms of lab testing.
